Krill Oil, Backgrounds and Benefits

Sustainability of Krill Oil

The Power of Phospholipids

Study: Bioavailability of Krill Oil

Krill oil is extracted from Antarctic 'krill', small crustaceans that inhibit the pristine, cold Antarctic waters. Krill oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, in particular the well-known fatty acids EPA and DHA. In krill oil most fatty acids are bound as phospholipids, which offers huge advantages compared to fish oil.

EACH CAPSULE KRILL OIL CONTAINS:
Superba™ Krill Oil 500 mg
        Total phospholipids 217 mg
             Total Omega-3 108 mg
                     -  C20:5n-3 (EPA) 72 mg
                     -  C22:6n-3 (DHA) 11 mg
             Total Omega-6 10 mg
Astaxanthin 72 mcg
Other Ingredients: Fish Gelatin, glycerol, water (capsule)

RECOMMENDED USE
Adults: Take 1 -2 capsules twice daily, preferably with a meal.    Children: Adapt the dosage according to body weight

WHY KRILL OIL?
The positive effects of krill oil (as superior source of omega-3 fatty acids) are too many to mention, but can be summarized as follows:

 - Supports mental and behavioral health

 - Supports health joints and muscles

 - Supports health blood circulation

 - Supports healthy skin

- Supports healthy respiration

WHY IS KRILL OIL SUPERIOR TO FISH OIL?

Important fatty acids such as EPA and DHA are also found in fish oil, but there is a major difference. Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are bound as triglycerids, whereas in krill oil omega-3 fatty acids are mainly bound as phospholipids. These phospholipids make krill oil superior to  fish oil, as source of omega-3 fatty acids:

BETTER STABILITY
Phospholipid are far more stable than triglycerids, making krill oil a stable oil whereas fish oil easily oxidates and gets rancid (and even toxic). Krill Oil has another enormous advantage: it contains natural  astaxanthin, the most powerful antioxidant known (300x as strong as vitamin E). Astaxantin does not only preserve krill oil into a stable oil, it also brings numerous health benefits for the body, a present from nature.

HIGHER BIOAVAILABILITY
Before fatty acids can be absorbed by the body, they need to be transformed into in phospholipid by the liver. This happens with all fatty acids, including those in fish oil. However, the fatty acids in krill oil already are bound as phospholipids, which is the physiologically correct form that your body can immediately absorb and use.

A study that compared the bioavailability of both oils showed, 60% more fish oil is needed to gain the same EPA en DHA  blood levels, compared to krill oil.

The importance of krill oil becomes even more evident when realizing all cell membranes in the body are built of two parallel chains of phospholipids, and for instance the brains consist for 60% of fat - as phospholipids.  Krill oil offers these important phospholipids in the exact form the body can use.

ORIGIN AND SUSTAINABILITY
Fish stocks are widely over fished and depleted. International trade in fish oil makes the origin of most fish oil unknown.

Krill stock however is not over fished, and the origin of krill is known in detal. Krill is freshly harvested from pristine Antarctic waters, and is fully controlled by the Commission for the Conservation of the Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). The fishery on krill is eco-friendly and highly sustainable, using a newly developed and patented fishing method that singles out and releases unharmed any side-catch.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KRILL OIL AND GREENLIPMUSSEL OIL?
Often people ask us what the difference is between krill oil and greenlipmussel oil: which one is to be preferred?

The answer is: krill oil and greenlipmussel oil differ substantially from each other, and can best be taken together!

Krill oil must be compared to fish oil: both are important sources of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. However the fatty acids in krill oil are bound as phospholipids, and krill is harvested using an eco-friendly and sustainable fishery. This makes krill oil a superior source of EPA and DHA, compared to fish oil.

Greenlipmussel oil is in a league of its own: it contains a unique omega-3 fatty acid that is found nowhere else in the world, This fatty acid gives greenlipmussle oil its extraordinary biological properties, 200 to 250 times stronger than fish oil.

Greenlipmussel oil is extracted from cultured mussels and is much more expensive than krill oil and fish oil. For this reason capsules greenlipmussel oil (Aspitol) are small and contain a small amount of oil, just enough to supply the amount of oil needed for the desired biological effect.

However, the body also needs sufficient amount of the  important fatty acids EPA and DHA. Krill oil is the preferred source of these fatty acids. for this reason we recommend to use greenlipmussel oil (Aspitol) and krill oil on a daily base together.

Aspitol and krill oil have a synergetic effect: they supply the body with important omega-3 fatty acids that work in combination even better that each of them separately.
